[ Father Kotomine lifts his hand to wave it lightly in front of his face to have Jean dismiss the idea that he actually is arrogant for any other reason than his personality is trash.
But he is soon clapping his hands together in mock applause that the young man is able to figure out how to use his magic. He even gives a very unenthusiastic "yay" after each clap. ]
Now, you can start thinking of how to use this against people. [ 'Cause that's the natural progression of things, right? Right. ]
[ No applause is better than fake applause. Jean shoots Kirei a flat look, but he's resolved not to let the AI's difficult attitude subtract from the small feeling of accomplishment he had just had, so he tries to keep his annoyance at bay. Though, that momentary joy quickly burns out after he hears what Kirei has to say. ]
Why is that the first thing that comes to your mind ... [ What Kirei says does make sense, and it's something he knows he has to figure out, but this progression went from 0 to 100 way too quickly. Now the wonderment he had is tarnished by the reality that this magic is just another weapon. Jean doesn't like harming others if he can help it. He'll do it, but he doesn't like it. ]
[ The ex-AI gives Jean an expression that says that he really hopes that the man wasn't going to just use it to heat his coffee. Like, my guy, my dude, just ask to reheat it if you're going to waste the ability to create fire from your hands, then. ]
Do you think that a world that has the ability for people to become mages is going to be a peaceful one?
Of course not. I'm not dumb. [ So far, this world appears to be much, much safer than his own, but he would be naive to think there isn't still some sort of danger to look out for. He's heard about the Shades at this point, after all (though, hasn't seen one). He also heard from Mikasa about that one noble family that were kidnapping monsters to harvest for parts. There are problems in any setting, and this place shouldn't be any different.
Jean's the guy who was going on about how humanity's struggle against the titans was pretty much doomed at the tender age of 12, so yeah, he's far from naive. ] I deal with enough fighting back home, so I was hoping to not have to think about that for just one moment.
[ Father Kotomine tilts his head as he gives Jean a brief look like he's not too sure that he isn't dumb, but he's willing to humor him about it. It's purely so he can rile the young man up some more, because that is the kind of personality he has been loaded with. ]
Oh, well. The moment has come and gone. Did you enjoy it?
[ If he takes most of Kirei's responses to him as another attempt at riling him up, the thought does help him calm down. This must be what entertains this strange and annoying man he's just met.
To answer that question, he actually did enjoy that fleeting victory. Small wins mean a lot when you spend most of your life in some kind of devastation. Of course, he knows verbally answering Kirei is just an invitation to more mockery, so he keeps his thoughts to himself. ]
Well, I'm not going to practice hurting people with magic right here in the open. [ If his attempt at warming up his coffee had set something on fire, he doesn't want to know what would happen if he actually attempted something destructive. He sees the need in being able to defend himself, but he's always used his weapons carefully so the same applies to offensive magic. ]
But do you know anything about healing? [ If magic can do pretty much anything, it should be able to do that too. ]

And 'course I'm right.
