You feel like you're floating. Around you, colors and sounds and smells swirl as if trapped in a whirlpool, vibrancy and hue ever shifting. The more you watch them, the less solid they are; they only become clear out of the corner of your eye. The area around you begins to feel more solid as well, until your feet are on the ground, the wind brushes playfully against your face -
and you know one thing, and one thing alone: this is a dream, and an incredibly realistic one at that.
The Prehistoric Wilde
Thick summer heat hangs heavy over the uninfected landscape like a damp blanket, smothering. The jungle around you is thick and wet, full of the sounds of chittering animals and the high-pitched drone of insects. The flora and fauna are like nothing you've ever seen before, large and alien in colors and shapes, though they bear no signs of the Cwyld. Flowers the size of a man's head and brightly colored in rainbow hues curl their tendrils invitingly, and giant mosquitoes buzz through the air seeking a meal. You can barely see the glow of the twin moons through the thick canopy above. There are no signs of civilization - at least, not the civilization most will be used to; only the distant sound of the river, compelling you to follow its winding path. But will you go forward, or will you go back?
![]() Rumble in the Jungle Making headway through the jungle at night is a chore. The foliage grows thick and the humid heat is oppressive for even those who enjoy the warmth. There are no clear paths here, no easy way through. The canopy of the ancient trees far, far over your head is just as dense, but the faintest moonlight filters through the holes left by the huge leaves in stippling patterns across the musty forest floor. 'Large' seems to be the theme - lining whatever path you pick your way through, there are pitcher plants massive enough to swallow a grown man, with small animals and giant insects being digested down inside the sticky liquid that fills them. The flowers are as big as a man's head, and come in a rainbow of colors, their venomous tendrils curling toward signs of life. The trunks of some of the trees are as thick as houses, and shade the ground beneath them with leaves like umbrellas. The hand-sized mosquitoes thrive in the sticky heat and if not killed first, can make off with a full pint of blood from an unsuspecting person. At some point in your journey, the ground begins to rumble beneath your feet. The farther you go, the longer you walk, the more signs of life become visible: thick, winding trails of crushed foliage, huge, animalistic footprints in the mud. Luckily, to this world, you are small and insignificant, and may escape the notice of the local Monsters - the massive, prehistoric ancestors of today's Monsters. They seem like giants, colossal Titanoboa Nagas with hollow fangs like swords, towering Fauns with the lower halves of mammoths, sabertooth Turnskins, pterodactyl Harpies with leathery wings. Even the parts of them that resemble humans (and they have far fewer human-like parts than their modern counterparts) are larger than any actual human being. They operate primarily on instinct, made even stronger by the full moons above, and perceive the strange new creatures as threats - or food. Sticking to the river seems safest - at least until you run into megalodon Merrow, singing an alien, but alluring, song to draw in prey, or the apex predator of this prehistoric world - Dragons, bigger and scalier than the ones Mirrorbound may know, stopped to drink at the river. All other Monsters flee from the huge reptiles, lest they become food themselves. Luckily you can defend yourself with your new abilities, or your neat changes - you're small, but not totally helpless. Interesting to note... while all other Monster types are represented, there are no Fae or Chimeras in the Wilde here, and the Vampires are more like huge bat-monsters that traverse the jungle on all fours than humanoid bloodsuckers. |
![]() The Natives Going backward, away from the distant sounds of the sea and against the current of the river, leads you through dense jungle. How long have you traversed the landscape? Hours? Days? Time passes funny in dreams. Eventually the trees thin out, grow taller and less leafy, and the air becomes drier. Instead of loamy soil beneath your feet, you start to feel rocky, harder earth, and spot outcroppings of stone. The sun begins to rise, which makes it easier to spot people on the horizon, a little settlement coming to life in the morning, nestled where the river forks into two. They're much hardier than the familiar people of Aefenglom, sunburned and dressed in natural, rough fabrics. Their homes, if one can call them that, are shoddy little structures made of sticks and leaves and mud, pressed up against the sturdiness of the stone formations. And, when they spot strangers approaching their village, they scramble for their weapons - crude clubs, stone axes, even just large rocks snatched up off the ground. The translation magic works on them, thankfully. Their speech is halted and simple, but they get their point across. Tell them who you are, or they'll beat your brains in. Monsters might get their brains beat in anyway if they aren't careful, even though they're much smaller than the Monsters these humans are used to. And Witches? May the gods help you if you use magic in front of these terrified, unevolved people, lest they mistake you for a Fae (the word is whispered with fear and revulsion in their voices) and swarm you with simple iron tools. If you're an actual Fae, an obvious Fae? They'll whisk their children into their huts protectively and then run you right out of the village. Violently. The truly observant, or those who can see through illusions, among you may notice something strange, though. Some Fae actually seem to live among them, heavily cloaked in natural illusions, with the primitive humans none the wiser. There are just a few, but all of them look young, twelve or thirteen at the oldest, and they are all scared of their secret coming to light. Fae who get caught tend to be burned at the stake around here. |
![]() The Invaders Perhaps you chose to go forward, with the current and toward the distant sound of ocean waves, where the river pours into the sea. More long-time residents of Aefenglom may notice that the shoreline is familiarly-shaped, but wider, bigger, not yet worn down by thousands of years of erosion. There is no bustling Harbor, only the waves crashing on the rocks, small islands dotting the water near the shore. There is no Bright Wall - there is no city, even, only an expanse of beach transitioning gently into an idyllic grove dotted with gauzy, pointed tents, and a beautiful, gilded ship half sunk into the sandy earth. It seems safer than the jungle, at first - until you notice all the Fae. They're more insectoid than the ones many are familiar with, with big, glittering eyes and either bright, jewel-toned wings like dragonflies or butterflies, or delicate, leafy wings in greens and browns. They're also taller than modern, lesser Fae, though not by much, and they're thin and angular, standing on spindly limbs that barely seem able to hold them. Characters receive a warmer welcome here, by the band of true Fae that have made their camp in the grove, though the alien-looking beings have a tendency to treat them like toys, children, or both, cooing over their sizes and their magic. "Look at the little Monsters! Aren't they cute!" "We should make some of our own! And oh, the little humans have magic! Delightful!" It's hard to have a conversation with one - they're condescending at best, and at worst, flit off to another entertainment out of boredom while you're mid-sentence. And entertainments abound in their camp. They're served and tended to like emperors by collared humans - adults and young adults do the heavy labor, including pulling grand little chariots for transportation, though there are some highly-supervised human children running about fetching drinks and fanning their Fae masters with palm leaves. Farther out, a large, deep pit has been dug out of the earth, ringed by a waist-high barrier of logs, a few Fae gathering at the barrier and leaning over, talking in conversational, happy voices. Down below, Chimera gladiators fight for their amusement, while the Fae keep up running commentary, discussing each warrior's chances, new breeding prospects, interesting crossbreeds their fellows have come up with ("She's trying an Arachne and a Turnskin together, how delightful!"). Trying to disrupt the proceedings will only result in the Fae turning their magic on you - illusions and curses, nasty little tricks. Sit down, silly little ones! The fight is just getting good! Or maybe... Maybe they'll toss you into the pit to see what your chances are in battle. |

kaden | fire emblem fates | witch
[ he's running, and on two feet--- it seems just quick enough to keep enough space between him and what he's getting away from. the leaves smack his arms and at his legs, branches become tangled in his tail as he continues to move as quickly as he can through the dense jungle. with the heavy thudding of something large behind him, kaden's not stopping to smell the roses (because these roses would probably gobble him up, ears and all).
when he makes a turn, he scrambles to keep himself from losing his footing. somehow despite there being tons of things that stick and prod at him as he leaps through a rather dense patch of brambles, he keeps his momentum and he doesn't succumb to the slick, muddy ground. it's only when he realizes that the ground is becoming wetter and less solid, that he probably has to make his stand.
something about strategy. or something.
what's the most unfortunate is that he slams into someone as his thoughts are done wandering, sending himself sprawling to the ground, tail whipping around. from the brush, an imposing and monstrous figure emerges--- one of those huge bat-like beasts, the primordial vampire, looking hangery. ]
Sorry! Sorry... [ he's not apologizing to the bat. no, he's apologizing to whoever he collided with. hopefully they're not prone either, as picks himself up off the ground. ]
... help me out, and I'll pay you back in kind!
II.) do you know what's in the water that you drink?
[ but of course, after all of that nonsense with the vampire and the almost getting eaten alive and kaden's incredibly successful use of magic... he's made his way to the river relatively unscathed. the problem with spending that time running is the dirt! the sweat! the anxiety! oh, and the part where he's a little bruised and cut up, so he's definitely looking a little worse for wear.
this is why a river is great: he can easily use his scarf which has very little use in humid weather as a way to scrub himself off. the sound of water is soothing to his ears, of which his heartbeat has been deafening for the past while. he'll even dip his tail into the river, knowing that's probably the best way to get it clean though the drying part will be incredibly unfun.
but the song of the marrow is lurking, just beneath the burbling of flowing water. maybe this is how someone will come across the dirty kitsune, who immediately covers up his face with his scarf. ]
Wh... I'm not clean, can you come back in five minutes? Ten? Then we can talk.
[ near his submerged tail, the water seems to go still. just waiting. ]
III.) they're afraid of you and me
[ he's been able to camouflage his ear and tail through a bit of magic--- making them disappear and leaving him to look human for the most part. it's why he's been able to get into the native's village without much scrutiny, though he despises not having his kitsune parts freely out. despite all the fighting he's done alongside humans of royal blood, there will never not be some kind of bias against them. the worst of them have poached enough of his people's fur, and the best of them... well. he has hopes for the future, but that's on hiatus for now.
kaden is finally able to sit down, resting his back against one of the huts. he closes his eyes, though his nose is certainly starting to tingle. maybe it's from the dust? the leaves? either way, it's very difficult to hold it in any longer and kaden sneezes. ]
Ugh. Excuse me.
[ the thing he, doesn't realize his ears and tail are now visible. his concentration broken, he goes back to closing his eyes. ]
IV.) wildcard
[ obligatory wildcard, just pm me if you want something different or leave something here! :3 ]
i.
Not ideal.
What's even less ideal is some loud guy stumbling out of the jungle, loud as hell and slamming directly into him. Emil almost loses his balance, flails his arms, manages to catch both of their weight with a big 'oof' as all his weight falls on the foot he'd thrown backward. Lifting his arms, he pushes the other guy back onto his feet and catches his balance. Before the guy's even done apologizing, Emil is pulling out his short sword.]
Oh my god, are you stupid?! How loud are you!?
[...Emil, you're being much louder and more clumsy than this guy you're criticizing for being clumsy. Not that it matters, because a second later there's a giant bat monster flapping out of the jungle like a nightmare from hell and Emil's eyes go wide.]
Helvetes jävlar, I'm really sick of this dream.
[The guy is offering to help him out and he'll help in kind, and Emil finds himself looking down at his sword. Making a snap decision, he resheaths it and pulls out one of his explosives and a lighter, glancing over at the other guy.]
Fine, fine. Keep it distracted, I'm...I have an idea. Just...you run when I tell you to, okay?
[Glancing over and making quick eye contact, he secures agreement, and the moment the other man makes to follow through, he's circling around behind the creature, thumb poised and ready to light the fuse. It'll take some good timing, and finding a spot to lodge the explosive, but he thinks...he thinks he can manage it.]
no subject
how stupid of him... oh no. Emil is right. he IS stupid. ]
It might be a dream, but I don't normally dream about being eaten! under his breath, he mutters. I'm the one doing the eating.
[ it's no time to think about fluffy cakes and green tea, though. ]
I can do that! [ finally, Kaden can feel useful? though he's a little confused by how the monster doesn't turn to face Emil who seems to be lighting something on fire with magic? maybe some kind of portable torch... he's not sure. but it's his turn to do something and Kaden knows he can do something that feels oddly intuitive.
raising a hand, balls of blue fire circle around his body but as soon as they appear, he throws them out to catch the beast's attention--- and it does. it swipes at the illusions, growling and snarling, but once it realizes it's fake... it lowers his head and prepares to charge. ]
I'm sorry he's so rude.
[No explanation on that, just yet, but he's a little occupied right now with circling around the gross bat-creature thing. Thankfully, Kaden is going along with him and doing some stuff to distract it, which makes Emil less interesting. The whole glowing blue balls thing is really cool, he has to admit, but he can ask about that later, for now he's got bigger things to deal with.
As the bat-creature turns and starts making to charge Kaden, Emil lights his explosive and runs toward the creature's back, barely managing to catch hold before it makes a move. It's a little difficult to climb, but Emil is driven by both a desire to not die and the opportunity to blow something up when he's this frustrated. Thankfully (for him, if maybe not for Kaden - hopefully he's fast enough to dodge...) the creature doesn't notice he's there until he's halfway up its back.]
That's perfect, try to keep it occupied, I'm almost....aaahhh!
[His words trail off into a yelp as the creature starts swaying around in a circle with its wings flailing, trying to shake him off, and all he can do is cling to its fur with a lit explosive in his hand.]
Shit! Help!
i think he's fantastic
but... that'd be pretty cowardly of him. especially when Emil's done so much already in providing him some protection. he's wondering what he can do next, what kinds of magic he has at his disposal in order to help? he can't just sit here and do nothing, right?
it's right then, that Emil calls out. his ears immediately go still along with his tail, and he stares at the monster which does its best to try to shake off the one holding the glowing device. ]
Hold on as tight as you can!
[ because he's going to have to get close for this to work, and he can't promise it'll be easy on both of them when he has no idea if he can summon the energy to do it. but he runs at the bat as quickly as possible, raising a hand, and throws what he thinks would be an effective punch.
the air shimmers around his fist as something takes shape around it. something wide and broad forms, a ball of energy that shatters as it collides with the bat's face--- hopefully to stun it. the force throws the fox-eared wizard back, throwing him to the ground again. ]
<3
And then Kaden is calling back for him to hold on tight as he can-]
As if I'm not doing that already!
[-and throwing a punch? Except the punch seems to be surrounded by a giant ball of energy that slams into the bat thing's face and it starts stumbling backwards a little, more still than it has been so far. Emil notices that Kaden falls backward, lands on the ground in the mud (oh that has to suck, Emil hates being dirty too) and it's abruptly all up to him because Kaden looks not only covered in mud, but pretty defenseless like that.
Scrambling the last few feet up to the monster's head, he clings to the fur at its neck and shoves the lit explosive down its giant ear. Kind of brutal, and he feels a very deep stab of guilt over it because that would probably be a terrible way to go, but what else can he do? Letting go of the creature's fur, he lets himself skid at top speed down its back and onto the ground with a painful thump, calculating maybe only 20 seconds before that explosive goes off, and he wants himself and Kaden out of the way before it does.
Running at top speed over to the other boy, he grabs at his arm and only succeeds in hauling him off the ground before the explosive goes off. Messily.]
Oh gross!
<3
he groans, one ear flicking weakly as he looks back and immediately regrets it. ]
Oh... ew, what did you do?!
[ half-amazed and half-freaked out, he's not thinking about escaping Emil's grasp yet. besides, this human effectively saved his life. whether it was out of convenience or kindness or some mixture of both, he can't say. but he's thankful, nonetheless. ]
Was that magic? What you did, I mean. I think I did some too.
[ and he immediately starts to wipe himself off on Emil. ]
I love this thread. Also cw: very mild emeto and monster gore
Blinking a couple of times, he looks over at the other boy, abruptly notices that he's got cat-like ears and a tail but is also covered in gore from the monster whose head he'd just blown up. Oh god, he'd just blown up something's head. Turning away from the other boy for a moment and letting go of him, he leans over, throws up into the mud, and then turns back, wiping his mouth, his whole body shaking a little.]
Sorry, sorry about that. I blew up its head.
[Reaching out, he tugs at the other guy's sleeve, then starts moving toward dry ground, out of the mud, and away from the gross bat carcass they'd left behind.]
No, no I'm not a mage, it was an explosive. I lit it and shoved it down its ear. Oh god.
[Exhaling roughly, he shakes his head and glances back, makes a wan little smile.]
You definitely did some magic. It was really cool, like some blue orbs and a big fist thing to punch it. I couldn't have done that alone, thanks.
[A beat, and then suddenly he stops dead.]
Oh my god, where's Kitty? Kitty?!
I TOO LOVE THIS THREAD thank you very much for it
you're welcome and thank you too. this CR is super fun so far.

Stumbling out of some of the brush, she pats at her skirt, dusting away some of the leaves and sticks that have gotten caught on her. Her heart is pounding and she places a hand over her chest, trying to still her heart. It wouldn't be good to get too worked up out here. The last thing she'd want to do is faint from surprise or something.
She really isn't experienced at all when it comes to venturing out in the wild like this. Even in her time with the army, she'd always sort of just followed along while others cleared the path ahead but it seems... right to follow something instead of going in circles. Maybe she'd heard one of her brothers or sisters mention something like that before. It's why she'd tried to make her way over towards the river. What she doesn't expect is to see a familiar face? )
Kaden?!
( Oh, but wait? He's... he's bathing? She yelps and turns aways, covering her face, )
I-I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to-- ( walk into him like this?! Even if he's really just washing his face or whatever, she doesn't know if he was going to do anything else, okay! She takes a half step away, trying to find somewhere else she can go. Not back into the jungle. Please, anything but that. ) Please, t-take your time! Don't mind me...

[ his napping buddy is here, too? it's a sense of relief to not be alone, but seeing Sakura delivers a jolt as well: did they accidentally fall asleep somewhere haunted, and this is why they're sharing dreams? or perhaps other circumstances have dictated this fortuitous meetup and the more he thinks about it, the less he wants her to be here. not that she's incapable of handling things herself, but... the thought of Sakura getting hurt makes his chest feel numb.
and his tail feel like it's getting pulled, but honestly that's the least of his concerns right now. ]
No, it's fine! I promise, this isn't like the bathhouse. I'm just taking some time to get some of this grime off.
[ though it's difficult, he smiles as wide as he can. easier to do, again, when it's for a friend. ]
Besides, you must be tired. The water is cool and refreshing, and it beats going back in there.
[ which is definitely out of the question to him. ]
no subject
Shyly, she turns around, her face still covered at first. Peaking through her fingers, once she's certain that it really is safe to look, she lowers her hands and seems to regain some of her composure almost instantly. She's so relieved to see a familiar face and Kaden's smile was always so reassuring to see! It's enough to make her smile, albeit, a little shakily because of how overwhelming this entire situations has been, )
Oh! It's so good to see you! ( If only it was under better circumstances! But their current situation already feels better than it was before when she was alone. She can even laugh a little at the idea of having to go back into the jungle again, ) You're right.
I thought I heard something this way... ( Singing? ) But I'm glad I found you, instead.
no subject
...
hm. ]
You heard singing? Well, I wasn't doing it...
[ and when he tries to stand, it's now painfully clear something has caught his tail. despite trying to do it a few more times, Kaden's no way able to get up from a sitting position. ]
Sakura. Can you help me... take my hand and pull?
no subject
Maybe it was a bird?
(She'd never heard anything like it before but then again, everything in this dream world was new and unfamiliar to her. She watches Kaden carefully, though. He'd tried to get up just now, hadn't he? And yet, there he was, still sitting. She wonders if maybe he hurt himself in the jungle and is only just now realizing it but if that was the case... wouldn't he just tell her? And what was this about taking his hand and pulling?)
Oh? (She's never been one to really turn down a request, especially from a friend,) Of course.
(She reaches out with both of her hands, her hands gripping Kaden's as she tries to pull with all of her strength...)
Uhm... Kaden?
(Please, stand up. She's starting to worry!)
1/2
really bad. ]
Sakura. [ he looks at her with wide eyes, ones reserved for moments of panic. ] Don't panic, but I think something is... holding onto it.
[ he takes a deep breath. who's panicking? he's not panicking! he just doesn't want her to, that's all! ]
I'm going to pull the hardest I can one more time with you, okay? If it's something scary, you need to think about running as fast as you can.
[ kaden squeezes his eyes tight. no screaming, not yet. ]
One... two... three!
2/2
1/2
D-don't say things like that! I-I won't leave you! ( That's it. She's made up her mind and she's not going to abandon Kaden! Whatever happens, she'll stick by his side. If she has to, she'll fight! But she'll never run. ) I'm here for you n-no matter what.
( And she on the count of three, she gives him one more pull! She uses all of her strength. Hinoka would be proud. )
no subject
And what comes out is leaves. Just leaves.
She stares, eyes wide with surprise as if she's still expecting the worse. Will the leaves come to life and become a giant leaf sludge monster? She doesn't know! But when it becomes apparent that it really is just leaves... )
Ha.... ( It starts off shaky, weak, and breathless but in time, she breaks into a fit of laughter, light and so, so relieved, ) Hahaha!
( She takes back one hand, wiping away at her eyes. Oh, goodness, she was so anxious, her eyes had started to water, )
Haha.... I'm s-sorry Kaden... ha.... I sh-shouldn't laugh...! ( She knows Kaden hates being dirty and his poor, poor tail is now a total mess but ) It's j-just that I was so worried b-but you're okay... fff...
( She can't stop laughing, sorry. )

The river is a communal resource, you kn--
[ wait. hold on. who's that?
Azura wipes at her eyes and squints at the person sitting on the riverbank. Ears, tail... ]
...Kaden?
[ well, damn. ]
aaaaaaaa!
I can't believe my eyes! Or maybe I'm sleeping again... hey Azura, do you think we're able to dream while we're already in one?
[ because he could already tell that wherever he is, it's not their base. he doesn't have his brush or his Beaststone and he never leaves home without either? ]
Come sit with me! There's plenty of room.
[ especially because for some reason, it's been very quiet since he settled on this rock by the river... ]
III.
but. the heat is miserable, far too miserable for him to humor any loud mouths this dream, so the spell he uses to make his movements mute serves to save him from any inter-mirrorbound fighting as well. he watches kaden for a bit, from a distance, assessing him closely until that sneeze occurs.
huh. something in that exploding, fluffy tail must have convinced him, because now he's approaching – footsteps still silent. ] Oh? Is that concealment magic? You're a speedy learner. That sneeze most likely alerted some terrible predator, though.
no subject
You think so? It doesn't feel like I had to do any learning at all. h[ e rubs one eye with the back of his hand, the other open and fixated on Mozart. ] All I had to do was want it, and it just sort of happened!
[ isn't that how magic works? it's not like he has any books to lug around. anyway, he tilts his head. ]
Predator... are you the terrible predator?
[ after all, his people have been poached for their fur. ]
no subject
[ there's as much emphasis on "the" as there is on "predator." not only does he look like a predator, but apparently he looks like The One! incredible. ]
I don't know if I should be flattered or not to be confused with a hunter. [ wait, no, it's an insult. he'll take being perceived as wimpy any day. ] Do you see these delicate hands? I couldn't string a bow if I tried!
[ he lowers his voice and approaches with his hands up. ] Wouldn't, anyway. Please, don't worry. I'm a composer.
no subject
Hm... you've never raised a sword in your life, have you?
[ which is a good thing! he's not that Mozart has never used his hands, but that there's just something soft about them.
they look good for pats, tbh. ]
Composer? Is that like a mage? A knight? [ his ears flick! ] A prince?
no subject
after kaden grabs it, amadeus presents his hand palm upward, trapped and resigned to whatever this is. ] Flimsy enough for you, is it? [ a smirk. ] Now that you mention it, I haven't. [ and "never" is pretty impressive when you come from a place populated by weapons fanatics. ]
To be sure, it's not dissimilar to a mage. But, no – I write music. And play it. You know music, don't you? [ he's about to blow your mind. ]
no subject
some humans are smart. some are incredibly big dumb. but he'll learn more about him if he does the natural thing. ]
Just means you could be stronger in other ways, that's all.
[ but of course he knows music; the songstress azura could work wonders with her voice! ]
I know what music is. Why? Are you some kind of... music-making magician? [ a beat and then his tail flicks. ] Is that even a thing?
