Plotting Post: June, Dragon's Graveyard

Plotting Post: June, Dragon's Graveyard

This is the event plotting post for the player plot this month, being run by Skai. The IC event post will go up on June 11th!

Summary:

With the Cwyld slowly retreating and more of the Wilde becoming open to exploration, more and more Wilders begin reporting mysterious footprints and howls. Then, the first sighting finally comes back from Wilders who just barely managed to escape with their lives. They speak of seeing what could only be described as an enormous undead dragon that attacks anyone that ventures into a huge swath of the now Cwyld-free forest.

The thing does have the form of a dragon, cobbled together out of ancient bones and wreathed in 'flesh' of fungus and moss, spurting black fungal spores with every step. But the creature is possessed by many centuries-old spirits rather than a single ancient dragon risen from the dead. It cannot be 'killed' in a conventional sense, but although it is very aggressive (especially to Witches), it can be fought against and broken into bits with a concerted effort.

The spirits can also be communicated with, though their answers are fragmented and wild, in a language so old that it is at times very difficult to understand. Only one thing is a constant in the words they speak: the desecrater.

With further exploration from PCs and Wilders deeper into the forest, the place that the 'dragon' came from is revealed: The Dragon's Graveyard. The location itself has an aura of solemn decay; no trees grow within the site itself, but some of the half-bleached bones themselves are as huge as trees might be, rising up into the sky from among the moss and ferns. Pieces of a man's body can be found scattered about outside the grave site, and the wreckage of what had been a ritual site he constructed inside.

Further investigations of his scattered possessions will reveal that he had been a rogue necromancer, fleeing Morgana's control some months ago. He had found his way through the now-cleared forest to an ancient site, a a place where long long ago, dragons once came when their end was near. He tried to harness its power; the attempt was unsuccessful, but the fragments of ancient spirits, crazed by this further desecration, spawned this half-physical and half-spiritual creature. It may be a struggle to investigate properly though, as even weaker spirits will attempt to possess people entering the Graveyard and drive them and their companions out. However, despite their aggression, your characters may find that they actually appreciate attempts to clean up the wreckage of the ritual (and the man) left behind.

If broken and defeated, or if the spirits are magically compelled to leave the construct, the 'dragon' will eventually re-form in time as the spirits regain power within the Graveyard. There is no physical way to kill the not-quite-dragon, but there are a couple of ways to deal with it.

One option could be to seal the area, both to prevent further disturbances and to keep the spirits from rampaging, but this would require a group effort, bringing many Witches on the journey through the wilderness. Another might be to appease the spirits with offerings of the things they valued in life, but that comes with its own very literal cost, as many dragons love to hoard rare and valuable items: gold, jewels, feathers from rare forest birds, ornate stone carvings, and so on. Some will only accept items that have great value to their owner, appreciating the value of sacrifice rather than the item alone.

Either way, something must be done to urge the spirits to fall back to sleep, or whatever final rest that the dragons of old found...
