My hammer didn't start out as a weapon. It's a tool, for forging. But I've had to use it to protect myself, and I've always figured I'd do better with a familiar tool than an unfamiliar weapon, if it comes down to a struggle.

Do you like fighting?

Forging?

I'd love to see your work someday, if you'd have the time! Perhaps I could even purchase something. [this boy loves a cool sword, and totally doesn't know the niche vampire lore meaning behind hector's profession]

I do, I think it's an excellent way to get to know someone. Much easier than small talk.

Oh, no, I don't forge like that. I make...made...forged devils. Night Creatures. Humans called them monsters.

[Honestly, it's much cooler than smithing, if you don't mind being labeled as evil to the core.]

It doesn't seem like you'd get to know much except for how much they've trained and what their tolerance for pain is.

You create monsters? That's- [that's a crime! call the cops!] -interesting. For what purpose do you create them?

[he hopes its just as some weird friends, but it probably isn't except when it is because hector is cute]

Those things come to mind, yes, but also how hesitant or brash they are. How straightforward or underhanded they can be. Their sportsmanship speaks to their temperament in general.

Where I'm from, a sparring match is a widely preferred way to greet someone.

[because he's from 'repress your emotions until you die in a fight' land]

A few reasons. For protection. I come from a world where people suspected of having magic are burned at the stake. For companionship. I make pets. For study, to see what I can make. And for Lord Dracula, I raised an army to fight a war.

[These reasons are all equally fine, right?]

I feel like Wallachians could adopt that policy. They love fighting people. It's not for me though.

[Honestly, a Lord raising an army to fight a war is entirely as commonplace as pets and academia where Dimitri is from - he doesn't question it. What he will wonder about later is how magic is so stigmatized.

Though, the Church in Fodlan does also have some questionable reasons for heresy.]

Then, how do you prefer to get to know someone? Many where I'm from also prefer to share a meal, or tea.

I...usually don't. Get to know people, that is. I lived as a hermit until my lord recruited me.

I guess if I was getting to know someone, I'd do so discussing philosophy or the sciences. You can learn much about someone base on what they've chosen to study...if they've chosen to study anything.

A hermit? Do you miss living alone?

[It sounds like a nice life............]

Forgive me, I don't mean to bring up bad feelings. Getting to know someone through academic conversations is a fairly common thing, I think. You're quite right. It's a good way to learn someone's priorities.

And those so often define someone.

I...am living with someone now, and I find it preferable to isolation. If the people here were like they were in Wallachia, I would miss it.

[But he doesn't want to get too personal here.]

They can, yes. What sort of things did you study?

I'm glad you've found a comfortable home here.

[He'll leave it at that.]

I studied combat, for the most part. As I've said, I preferred to practice my martial abilities.

But of course I also studied writing, poetry, history, and the teachings of the Church. It was expected of everyone in my station.

I am too.

Is your Church terrible? The Church in my world is horrific.

[personal profile] boarddyd 2020-06-10 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That's... a rather divisive question.

The Church takes in refugees, and maintains peaceful relations between our nations. It also punishes heresy with death and no trials, and upholds some antiquated laws that create a natural imbalance in society.

People from Fodlan are all of different opinions regarding the Church.

[Diplomatically leaving his own opinion OUT]
petcromancer: (recollection)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-06-11 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ours in theory does the same, but focuses more on elevating its own power and punishing whatever it deems heresy and less on actually helping its worshipers.

[That is what Hector has experienced to be true, at least.]

[personal profile] boarddyd 2020-06-11 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
There are some from Fodlan who would accuse our Church of the same - and more.

I admit I'm finding it relaxing to not have such politics at play here. Though I'm sure there are other concerns to be had.
petcromancer: (retrospection)

[personal profile] petcromancer 2020-06-12 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. There was apparently some situation before I arrived in this city, but I count myself fortunate that I haven't had to navigate through politics here.
