MARCH MIRRORBOUND COUNCIL POST

Welcome to the Mirrorbound Council discussion post for the month of March! This is the space to discuss IC concerns from your characters that can be brought to Parliament by members of the Mirrorbound Council. Here are some quick facts!

• Membership in the Mirrorbound Council is open, so if your character is the type to get involved, you're more than welcome to sign up here.
• More information on the Council's history, current members, and motions can be found here.
• Each motion must be cosigned by 3 Council members.
• Each council member can only cosign 1 motion per month.
• As a result, there may be months where not all motions can be raised. In that case, motions will be brought to Parliament in the order of greatest IC support to least IC support.
• To suggest an IC motion, please post to the most appropriate heading below. Make sure to list the name of the character who would suggest it so they get credit!
• To support an IC motion, comment to the motion with either "+1" or some other indication of your character's support. There's no limit on how many motions each character can support, so be sure to check the whole post!
• All characters can suggest and support motions ICly — not just Council members! Consider this post an OOC representation of an open-forum style discussion open to all Mirrorbound. The goal is to get as many people involved as possible, both ICly and OOCly, so don't hesitate to chime in!
• The deadline to submit motions is March 15th. After submissions close, Council members will attach their names to motions and submit them to the mod team by March 25th.
• All OOC ideas and suggestions are welcome as well, so please hit us up!

So, starting things off, would love thoughts on ways to make this work.

Based on this answer on the FAQ, it seems like there's the possibility of locals trying to cheat less savvy mirrorbound that attempt to engage in trade.

It's not something I think that would be terribly "active" but something for the background that Edelgard would bring to meetings as a thought would be forming some sort of trade protection office or society or guidelines/laws to protect mirrorbound from merchants that are interested in cheating them.

I was initially thinking some "trade office" for reviewing agreements and the like, but I would love to put ideas together and see what others think?

Character name: Towa Herschel
Motion description: The Entertainment District has nearly all but one thing, and that is working theaters. Currently, that is because theater itself is considered illegal by Aefenglom's books. And that's something I'd like to look at changing.

In the past, there was one instance in which Mirrorbound put together on their own (albeit illegal) production of an opera, using the political upheaval to fly under the radar prior to our first departure to Dorchacht.

As a cultural exchange, I think seeing the theater legalized and utilized by both Aefenglom and the Mirrorbound alike would be a wonderful way to take a step towards coming together as two separate peoples in the same community.

being the victorian he is, andersen sees aefenglom's artistic scene as ripe for development. all art -- be it painters, sculptors, designers, writers, etc. -- should have a shot at being financially supported. and who better to start a wave of patronage than the mirrorbound??

he's interested in starting a sponsorship fund for outstanding artists and he would very much like other artists to help decide who'll be the ones to get the money. so if your character's the artsy type... or the sort to get hassled by andersen's persistent campaigning... he'll likely contact them and ask for their help in drafting this motion up. he's bad at politics! help a manlet out!

ah yes, allow me to offer someone whose both artsy And has a low tolerance for being hassled!!

salieri's political experience mostly stems from his service in the royal monarchy of emperor joseph- but he was also known for his own activism towards the dwindling art scene at the time, even if it was more musically inclined! that being said, andersen could absolutely reach out to salieri for support. he has a knack for schmoozing and being a good public figure!!

um YES PLEASE!! andersen would greatly appreciate his support bc his own skills at schmoozing are despairingly low. he only knows how to be charming in his writing, not his attitude........ he'd probably pester salieri a lot to be like bro... we gotta HELP THE ARTS

re Towa's proposal about theater: Is there a good IC understanding yet of why that was banned? I as a player think it's a fantastic motion but also like we could get some meaty IC conflict out of chewing that one over.

thank you for asking this question, i was wondering the same. i wasn't 100% clear on this so i went digging in the faq and apparently we have wizard jenkins to blame. thanks a lot, wizard jenkins.

i'm not sure what the best way is to incorporate this information into ic happenings, but it does seem like there's a lot of potential to negotiate with parliament regarding, like: regulation of magic in theater. maybe finding a middle ground that isn't "ban all theater because of wizard jenkins, who ruined it for all of us". etc.

edit for an important note: i'm not sure that this fact is widely known! about wj i mean. i think it's relevant to the people who have done the specific digging.

i like the idea of a trade office! i think it might be framed icly as streamlining and creating an even playing field for all trade. i know from giorno's perspective, he would want to ensure an even playing field for not only mirrorbound but refugees as well. he'd also point out that it might be wise to look ahead to the possibility of an inter-state trade treaty of some kind with dorchact, etc. for our purposes OOCly, that's probably Too Much Right Now, but! that's where his head would be at.

Character name: Giorno Giovanna
Motion description: With the ongoing influx of Mirrorbound, refugees from Dorchact and the Cwyld, and the standard disparities of wealth that exist in any great city, it's becoming clear that Aefenglom is not currently set up to support a significant increase in population, especially of those with little to no means of supporting themselves. Carving out a sector of the Aristocratic District to form the Haven has been a temporary fix, but has ultimately caused a great deal of disquiet and even violence.

In order to alleviate these problems in the future, I propose a system of integrated housing on a sliding scale of affordability. For example, the first two months might be free; the next six at quarter- or half-cost, rising to full cost rent after this leniency period is up. These homes should be in a variety of styles and sizes and integrated into a variety of neighborhoods. The ultimate goal of these homes is threefold: to encourage refugee and Mirrorbound presence throughout the city, not just in the Haven and Aristocratic District, thereby lessening the burden of their presence on any one district; to support refugees and Mirrorbound in the process of getting settled during a stressful and disorienting time; and to increase Mirrorbound and refugee visibility throughout the city.

Should any neighborhoods put up resistance to this proposition, it ought to be easy to find ways to sweeten the deal by identifying the neighborhood's needs and seeking to meet them. For example, if a certain neighborhood is struggling with low traffic in its shops, Parliament might agree to host a popular element of a festival in that neighborhood in exchange for their participation in the housing program.

and WOW YEAH, i will go on record as saying myr would be Uneasy about pushing on the coven for a full reversal of the law if he knew the wizard jenkins story because mind-control magic is a hot button of his. heck, honestly, he would be for slow-rolling their approach to the coven ANYWAY bc his default assumption is there's a good reason for that law & waltzing in to upend it because we mirrorbound find it offensive is Not A Good Idea w/o understanding that reason.

now if the reason is dumb, well.... but defs down for talking about ways to make this palatable ICly/moderate the request!

eta to your edit: yeah it sounds like that would require some investigation to find out! which is something to have our dudes get into as part of the process. could be cool!

Excellent. That's more or less what I had in mind, too. Edelgard really wants trade equity. It's not just about the Mirrorbound.

The treaty is probably a bit much for right now but definitely something to work towards.

Honestly, Edelgard would support this as well. She's been working on establishing trade and investments and so passively creating income that would be well spent on something like this. She's canonically a fan of and patron of opera, and a painter herself (as a hobby).

She'd schmooze with him and offer support, just like with Towa.

Character name: Edelgard von Hresvelg
Motion description: Edelgard would like to establish some sort of trade office that assists Mirrorbound and Refugees with trade. It's been noted in some responses to mod questions that there are unscrupulous merchants that would happily use Mirrorbound's lack of knowledge of laws/etc to cheat them out of money. Noted here!

Such an office would be intended to assist in matters of trade/investment/finance and act as a go-between/provide legal aid for entrepreneurs.

regarding the investigation, MAYBE NOT because here it is in front of god and everyone. so now we know icly, at least in broad strokes.

and yeah the traumatic nature of the event means it will probably go best if a compromise is found i def agree on that. ICLY WE WILL SEE HOW IT GOES. so many theater majors in this game.

hello!! i hope i'm not butting in w this! i wanted 2 give you some more info in regards to the situation w the theater that would b helpful for Myr's case!

the prohibition of theater DOES sound very air tight and immobile but in all honesty the law is a little more lax than we originally thought! people are able to get away with projects (such as with aurora musicalis) if they're careful with skirting enough, and there's even a few rogue theater groups that operate under this instance. at the very most you'll get community service and a magic restraining bracelet dang

if u wanted Myr to find all of this out naturally then that sounds good! otherwise i hope this was able 2 help a little bit w how much leeway Myr would have in opening up a case- and not to worry too much about the consequences or being punished. IT'S ALL super low key....
